Dark urine during flu: what to know

Dark urine during flu can result from fever, sweating, vomiting, or reduced drinking, but ongoing or unusual colour needs assessment. A flu-like illness may also overlap with another infection or condition, so the whole pattern matters. Reduced urination, severe weakness, pain, or yellow skin are not symptoms to ignore.

Fever and sweating increase fluid loss, while a blocked nose, nausea, or fatigue can make drinking less appealing. Burning urine, side pain, or persistent fever may indicate a urinary problem rather than flu alone. Tea-coloured urine with yellow eyes or skin can accompany Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. Take small, regular drinks and rest; if nausea is present, frequent sips may be easier than a large drink. Monitor urine output, temperature, breathing, and alertness. Contact a clinician if dark urine continues despite being able to drink, or if fever and illness are worsening.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe pain, visible blood, or yellow skin or eyes. A rapidly worsening flu-like illness also warrants prompt assessment, particularly when drinking and urination are falling.
