What should you know about dark rough spots on skin?

A spot may darken after a pimple, bite, scrape, or irritated hair follicle. Rough bumps around hairs can occur with Folliculitis or Razor Bumps, while recurring breakouts may fit Acne or Hormonal Acne. Burning, scaling, or bumps around the mouth can occur with Perioral Dermatitis; flushing and sensitivity may occur with Rosacea. Shape, texture, location, itch, tenderness, and timing help separate these patterns, and a dark mark is not enough to identify its cause.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild product, moisturise, and use sun protection on exposed skin. Do not squeeze, scratch, shave repeatedly over, or scrub the spots. Introduce one new product at a time and stop it if burning or swelling develops. A clinician can recommend treatment for active Pimples or inflammation; LED Light Therapy may be discussed for selected acne concerns, but it will not diagnose the cause of a dark mark.

Arrange a skin review if a spot is enlarging, changing in colour or shape, bleeding, crusting, painful, repeatedly returning, or failing to settle. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, facial swelling, or fever. A clinician may examine the surface and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.
