What should you know about dark gold color urine?

Urine becomes deeper yellow when it contains less water. Heat, sweating, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply drinking less can contribute to dehydration. In that setting, thirst, a dry mouth, headache, tiredness, or dizziness may occur. Dark urine can also appear with some medicines, supplements, or foods. Less commonly, liver or bile-flow problems can make urine brownish or tea-coloured, especially with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, or pain under the right ribs.

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the change is new, whether it improves after drinking, and what other symptoms are present.

Drink water regularly and consider an oral rehydration drink if you have lost fluids through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Take small, frequent sips if your stomach feels unsettled. Rest somewhere cool after heat exposure. Do not force large amounts of fluid if you have been told to restrict fluids because of heart or kidney disease. Review any newly started vitamins or medicines with a pharmacist or clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself.

If the colour does not return toward your usual shade after rehydration, arrange a medical review. A clinician may ask about medicines, examine you, and test urine or blood.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or signs of serious heat illness. Arrange prompt medical assessment for yellow eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, fever, painful urination, blood in the urine, or urine that stays very dark despite drinking.

Ask whether your urine colour could be related to dehydration, a medicine or supplement, or a liver or urinary problem. Tell the clinician when it began, how much you have been drinking, recent heat or illness, and any change in bowel movements or skin colour.
