What should you know about dark foggy urine?

A cloudy or foggy appearance may come from concentrated urine after sweating, low fluid intake, or overnight. Crystals, mucus, vaginal discharge, or toilet products can also alter what you see. Cloudiness with burning, frequent urination, lower abdominal pain, or fever may fit a urinary infection. Dark brown urine, especially with yellow skin or eyes, has a different significance and may relate to liver or bile conditions. One visual change cannot distinguish these possibilities.

Use a clean, transparent container to check the urine if the appearance is difficult to judge in the toilet. Take fluids steadily unless you have been given a restriction, and observe the next few samples rather than relying on one reading. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop regular medication on your own. Arrange a medical appointment if fogginess returns, lasts, or is accompanied by urinary symptoms; testing can look for infection, blood, protein, or crystals.

Seek prompt care for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, visible blood, severe discomfort, or difficulty passing urine. Emergency help is needed for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or very little urine. If symptoms follow intense heat exposure and include dizziness or reduced alertness, do not wait for the urine appearance to settle.

Ask whether you need a urine culture or tests for blood, protein, kidney function, or liver function. Describe the shade, cloudiness, smell, pain, urinary frequency, fever, recent heat or exercise, menstrual or vaginal discharge, and any new medicines.
