Avoid very hot water, vigorous nail scratching, and frequent product changes, because irritation can make flakes more noticeable. If scale is thick, painful, or not settling, a dermatologist can distinguish dandruff from seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or infection and select treatment accordingly.

Seek medical advice for scalp tenderness, marked redness, bleeding, pus, thick plaques, or areas where hair is thinning or breaking. Arrange a review when symptoms keep returning despite correct shampoo use, spread beyond the scalp, or begin after a new cosmetic product.
