Dandruff reflects a pattern of scalp shedding and irritation rather than dirt. Seborrheic dermatitis may add redness, oiliness, or scale around the scalp and face. A product reaction, psoriasis, or another skin problem can look similar, and treating the wrong cause may leave the flaking unchanged.

A period of clear skin does not always mean the tendency has disappeared. Heat, sweat, stress, infrequent washing, or styling products may coincide with a flare, although triggers vary. The useful goal is comfortable, quiet skin with a plan for early recurrence.

Topical antifungal treatment may be considered when yeast-related inflammation is suspected, while a different diagnosis may require a different medicine.

Wash the scalp consistently, rinse thoroughly, and avoid scratching. Keep a brief record of products and flare patterns so your clinician can distinguish a treatment problem from an irritant reaction. Do not layer several active products without guidance, especially if the scalp burns or becomes tender.

Book an assessment when flaking persists after a reasonable treatment trial, keeps returning quickly, or affects the face, ears, or hairline. Prompt review is appropriate for pain, pus, bleeding, marked swelling, fever, or patchy hair loss. Those signs can indicate inflammation or infection that needs a tailored examination.
