Dandruff on the face and eyebrows

The eyebrows, sides of the nose, hairline, and beard area contain many oil-producing glands. Seborrheic dermatitis can make these areas flaky, itchy, or mildly red at the same time as the scalp. Dandruff is mainly a scalp problem, but related scaling may be noticed near the hairline. Eczema, psoriasis, acne treatments, and reactions to cosmetics can look similar. New flaking around the eyes deserves extra care because that skin is thin and easily irritated.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Keep flakes soft with a plain moisturiser suitable for facial skin, and avoid picking or brushing them off. Pause new makeup, beard products, exfoliating acids, scrubs, and fragranced oils until the cause is clearer. Never transfer scalp products onto the eyelids or close to the eyes without professional instructions. A clinician can select a facial treatment or advise whether a medicated shampoo is appropriate for nearby hair-bearing skin.

Arrange a review if the rash persists, repeatedly returns, spreads beyond oil-prone areas, or affects the eyebrows despite gentle care. Seek prompt attention for eye pain, vision changes, significant swelling, pus, blisters, facial tenderness, or rapidly worsening redness. A diagnosis helps prevent using a strong or unsuitable product on delicate facial skin.
