What should you know about dandruff in microscope?

Flakes can look different under magnification depending on whether they are dry, oily, attached to hair, or mixed with product. A microscope alone cannot explain every cause of flaking. A clinician considers where the scale appears, whether the skin is red or inflamed, how itchy it feels, and whether there are broken hairs, sores, or hair loss. Seborrheic dermatitis is one possible explanation, while contact irritation, psoriasis, or infection may need different care.

Take a clear history of new hair products, washing habits, itching, and changes in the scale to the appointment. Follow the treatment plan rather than trying to identify flakes by appearance alone. A medicated shampoo treatment may be recommended for scalp dandruff; a topical antifungal treatment may be considered when the clinical picture supports it. Use only products intended for the scalp and stop any product that causes burning or swelling.

See a clinician if flaking continues, spreads, or is accompanied by intense itch, tenderness, redness, thick plaques, crusting, drainage, or patchy hair loss. Prompt assessment is especially useful when home care has not helped, because a magnified image cannot replace examination of the whole scalp.
