Dandruff Flakes: What Should You Know?

Fine white flakes can appear when the scalp is dry or irritated. Larger, greasy or yellowish scale with redness and itch may occur with seborrheic dermatitis. Flakes alone do not identify the cause, and they do not prove that the scalp is infected. Hair products, scratching and infrequent cleansing can change how much scale is visible.

Wash the scalp gently, massage with fingertips rather than nails, and rinse away shampoo fully. Let the scalp dry without vigorous rubbing. Pause a new product if it causes burning, rash or increased scaling. Persistent flakes can be assessed by a clinician, who may recommend a medicated shampoo treatment or topical antifungal treatment based on the appearance and symptoms.

Seek an assessment for thick adherent scale, bleeding, painful cracks, pus, significant redness, facial involvement or patchy hair loss. Also arrange care if itching is disrupting sleep or the problem keeps returning after appropriate routine care. An examination can separate dandruff from psoriasis, contact irritation, fungal infection or other causes.
