Dandruff and black hair: what to know

Dandruff is scalp flaking linked to changes in the scalp surface and oil environment. On black or very dark hair, pale flakes may stand out along the parting, roots, or shoulders even when the scalp feels only mildly irritated. Some people also notice itch, while others mainly see scale. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause more persistent scale, redness, or greasy yellowish flakes. Hair texture, styling products, and infrequent washing can affect how much buildup is seen, but flakes are not a sign that the hair itself is dirty.

Use a gentle cleansing routine and work shampoo onto the scalp rather than scrubbing the hair lengths. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest medicated shampoo therapy, with the product left on for the advised contact time. Avoid picking at scale, which can irritate the skin and break hairs. If scaling continues, topical antifungal treatment may be considered after an assessment. Choose conditioning and styling products that do not worsen residue, and rinse thoroughly.

Arrange a dermatology review if the scalp becomes sore, cracked, swollen, or persistently red, or if flakes form thick patches. Seek assessment for patchy hair loss, broken hairs, pus, or tender areas because these findings can point to another scalp problem. A clinician can distinguish dandruff from conditions such as scalp infection or inflammatory skin disease.
