Dandruff and Hair Breakage: What to Check

Scratching a flaky, inflamed scalp can roughen hairs and increase snapping. Frequent heat styling, bleaching, tight braids, extensions, or vigorous detangling can break hair even when the scalp is calm. Breakage leaves shorter pieces or split ends; hair shedding releases a full-length strand from the follicle. Treat itch without scratching: use fingertips, keep nails short, and wash gently. Reduce heat, chemical processing, tight styles, and friction while the hair recovers. Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb and avoid pulling wet hair. If scale is persistent or broken hairs cluster in patches, arrange a scalp examination before trying multiple products.
