What should you know about a D-dimer blood test?

D-dimer is released while the body makes and dissolves clots. A low result may help a clinician judge that a clot is less likely in someone whose initial assessment suggests a low or moderate concern. It does not replace examination or imaging when concern remains.

An elevated result is not proof of a clot. It can occur with infection, inflammation, pregnancy, recent surgery, injury, liver or kidney problems, and other situations. The laboratory threshold and your clinical context matter, so do not interpret the number alone.

The sample is usually taken from a vein in your arm. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent operations or injuries, clotting history, medicines, and current symptoms. Ask when and how the result will be discussed.

If the result needs follow-up, the next step may be an examination, monitoring, or imaging such as an ultrasound or scan. Do not start aspirin or an anticoagulant unless a clinician prescribes it for you.

Seek emergency care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain that worsens with breathing, coughing blood, fainting, or a new swollen and painful leg. These symptoms require prompt assessment regardless of whether a blood test has been taken.

Ask what level of clot concern prompted the test, how your result fits your symptoms, whether medication could affect interpretation, and whether further imaging is needed.
