Cystoscopy as a urology procedure

It may be used to investigate bleeding, repeated urinary symptoms, or an imaging finding. The urologist can sometimes collect tissue or carry out a minor treatment through the instrument.

The scope enters through the natural urinary opening, so there is no skin incision. Sterile fluid may be introduced to open the bladder gently and improve the view of its lining. You may notice pressure or an urge to urinate while the bladder fills.

A flexible examination can often be performed with numbing gel. A rigid instrument, biopsy, or treatment may require a different anaesthetic plan. The precise approach depends on the reason for the examination and what the urologist expects to do.

Check the appointment instructions for eating, drinking, transport, and regular medicines, because requirements differ with the anaesthetic. Report burning, fever, or cloudy urine before attending; a suspected infection may change the plan.

Afterwards, use the written recovery advice for fluids, activity, and pain relief. If sedation or general anaesthesia was used, arrange the recommended support and avoid tasks restricted by the discharge team. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well, since biopsy results are discussed separately.

Some temporary stinging, frequency, and lightly blood-stained urine may follow the procedure. The care team should tell you what is expected for your particular examination.

Contact the service urgently if you cannot urinate, pass clots, develop heavy bleeding, or have fever, chills, escalating pain, or persistent vomiting. If you are acutely unwell or cannot reach the service, seek emergency assessment.
