What should you know about cystoscopy RPG?

The term RPG can be used in urology for a retrograde pyelogram, an X-ray study in which contrast outlines the ureters and kidney drainage system. It may be performed during a cystoscopy when a clinician needs to examine areas beyond the bladder. The camera can show irritation, narrowing, bleeding sites, stones, or abnormal tissue. A small tissue sample may be taken if an area needs laboratory examination; the procedure itself does not establish a cancer diagnosis on appearance alone.

The test may be arranged for blood in the urine, repeated urinary symptoms, or follow-up of a known bladder problem. A bladder finding can have several explanations, including infection, inflammation, stones, or cancer, so results are interpreted alongside urine tests and imaging.

Tell the urology team about pregnancy possibility, allergies to contrast or medicines, blood-thinning medicines, urinary infection symptoms, and previous difficulty passing a catheter. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines, especially if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. Arrange an adult escort if the team says you will receive sedation. Contact the treating team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pain, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or burning that does not settle. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, develop heavy bleeding or clots, feel faint, or have trouble breathing after a medicine or contrast exposure.

Ask whether your appointment includes a retrograde pyelogram, biopsy, sedation, or anaesthesia; what the camera and imaging are intended to check; when you can resume normal activities; and when results will be available.
