When does your cycle return after miscarriage?

After a miscarriage, pregnancy hormones gradually fall and the uterine lining rebuilds before ovulation and a new period resume. The first period may differ from your usual pattern in flow, cramping or duration. Some bleeding immediately after the loss is recovery bleeding rather than a menstrual period, so note whether it is becoming lighter and whether pain is settling. Emotional recovery can also affect sleep, appetite and how symptoms feel; there is no single timetable that fits everyone.

Follow the discharge instructions from your maternity team, use pads if advised so you can observe bleeding, and record pain, temperature and changes in flow. Avoid putting anything in the vagina until your clinician says it is appropriate. Arrange follow-up if you are unsure whether the miscarriage is complete, if your period does not return as expected for your situation, or if you want advice about trying for pregnancy again. A transvaginal ultrasound may help check the uterus when symptoms or recovery are unclear. Medical and surgical management are different options when tissue remains, and your clinician can explain them.

Get urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder pain, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection or a pregnancy-related problem needing prompt treatment. Contact your care team if bleeding becomes heavier after improving or if pain is not controlled with the recommended medicine.

Ask how recovery is progressing, whether an ultrasound is needed, what symptoms should trigger urgent care, when contraception or sex is suitable, and when it is medically reasonable to plan another pregnancy.
