Curly Hair and an Itchy Scalp: What to Know

Dense curls can make it harder to see redness, flakes, scabs, or small bumps. Sweat, infrequent washing, fragranced products, gels, oils, and tight styles may irritate the scalp or leave residue. Flaking around the hairline or behind the ears can occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined plaques may suggest scalp psoriasis. Part the hair in several places and examine the scalp in bright light. Wash gently with lukewarm water, rinse products thoroughly, and avoid scratching, picking, heavy oils, and tight braids until the skin settles. Keep combs, brushes, bonnets, and pillowcases clean. Do not use a lice product unless live lice or nits have been identified.
