Short answer

Restless legs may not have one permanent cure, but symptoms can improve when contributing conditions are treated and a suitable daily plan is followed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why restless legs happen

Restless legs describes an urge to move the legs, often with crawling, pulling or uncomfortable sensations. Symptoms typically appear during rest, become more noticeable in the evening or at night, and ease temporarily with movement. Restless Legs Syndrome is a possible underlying condition, but similar sensations can also occur with Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Chronic Kidney Disease or Peripheral Neuropathy.

A clinician may ask when symptoms occur, examine your legs and review medicines, sleep and health conditions. Blood tests may be used to check iron stores or another contributor before treatment is chosen.

Steps that may help

Keep regular sleep and wake times, use gentle stretching or a warm bath before bed, and take short movement breaks during long periods of sitting. Moderate daytime activity may help, but strenuous exercise close to bedtime can aggravate symptoms for some people. Reduce caffeine, nicotine and alcohol if they worsen your nights. Do not start Iron Supplementation without checking whether low iron is present; excess iron can be harmful. Prescription treatment may be considered when symptoms remain frequent or disrupt sleep.

When to seek care

Arrange a GP review if restless legs repeatedly prevents sleep, affects concentration or is getting more troublesome. Seek prompt assessment for one swollen, hot or painful leg, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or weakness and numbness that develops quickly, because these symptoms may have causes needing urgent care. Mention pregnancy, kidney problems, anaemia symptoms and every medicine or supplement you take.

Questions for your doctor

Could low iron, a nerve problem or another condition be contributing? Should I have blood tests? Which lifestyle changes are worth trying first? Would Iron Supplementation be appropriate, and how will we monitor it? Could any of my medicines be aggravating the sensations?

Questions people ask

Is restless legs only a sleep problem?

No. It begins with uncomfortable sensations and an urge to move; disrupted sleep is a common consequence rather than the whole condition.

Will iron always cure restless legs?

Iron may help when iron deficiency contributes, but it is not suitable for everyone and should follow medical assessment.
