What should you know about cupping therapy for headaches?

Short answer
Cupping therapy may ease a sense of muscle tightness for some people, but it is not a substitute for assessing recurring headaches or urgent warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it may relate to headaches
Cups create suction on the skin and may leave round bruised marks or temporary soreness. Some people consider cupping when neck or upper-back muscle tension accompanies a headache. That experience does not identify the headache type or explain its cause.
Headaches can have different patterns, including migraine, tension-type headache, medication-related headache or a symptom of another condition. Cupping around the head, neck or shoulders can irritate skin and should be avoided over wounds, rashes or areas with reduced sensation. Wet cupping also adds puncture, bleeding and infection concerns.
Planning a session
Record when headaches begin, how long they last, associated nausea or light sensitivity, medicines used and possible triggers. Share this pattern with a clinician before trying a complementary treatment. If you proceed, use a trained practitioner, clean equipment and a clear plan that avoids the eyes, front of the neck and damaged skin.
Stop if you feel faint, unusually unwell or develop severe pain. Gentle hydration, regular meals, sleep and an agreed headache plan can be more useful than repeatedly treating the skin. For related muscle symptoms, read Back Muscle Spasm or Upper Back Pain.
Headache warning signs
Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, a headache after a head injury, new weakness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble speaking, vision loss, fever with a stiff neck, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a clinical review for a new pattern, headaches that keep returning, or a need for frequent pain medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Does my headache pattern need assessment before cupping? Could my medicines or blood-thinning treatment increase bruising or bleeding? Which body areas are safer to avoid? What symptoms mean I should stop and seek help?

Questions people ask
Can cupping cure headaches?
Cupping should not be presented as a cure. Recurring headaches need a pattern-based assessment and an appropriate treatment plan.
Can cupping be used on the head?
The head and neck need particular caution. Discuss location and technique with a qualified clinician, and avoid damaged skin or any area with reduced sensation.
