What should you know about cupping for spider veins?

Spider veins are small visible blood vessels close to the skin, often appearing as red, purple, or blue lines and branching patterns. Suction can pull and irritate the surrounding skin, but it does not seal the vessels. Cup marks may temporarily obscure the original pattern while adding bruising. Similar-looking vessels can occur with rosacea, while larger, raised or uncomfortable veins may need assessment for a deeper vein problem such as varicose veins.

Arrange an assessment with a qualified clinician before treating visible veins, particularly if one leg is swollen, heavy, painful, warm, or changing quickly. Do not place cups over fragile skin, open areas, infection, or an unexplained lump. For selected vessels, treatment choices may include sclerotherapy, IPL Photofacial, or pulsed dye laser treatment; the suitable option depends on vessel size, colour, location, skin tone, and circulation. Tell the clinician about medicines that increase bleeding or bruising.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden one-sided leg swelling, significant pain, warmth, skin colour change, chest pain, or breathlessness. After cupping, obtain prompt advice for severe pain, rapidly spreading bruising, blistering, numbness, or redness with discharge. These findings are not routine cosmetic marks and should not be masked with further suction.
