What should you know about cubital tunnel syndrome and hand swelling?

Cubital tunnel syndrome is irritation or compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes behind the inner elbow. Symptoms can travel into the ring and little fingers and may worsen when the elbow stays bent. Hand swelling can occur with injury, inflammation, infection, fluid retention, or another nerve or blood-vessel problem, so it should not automatically be attributed to the nerve.

A clinician may check sensation, finger strength, grip, circulation, neck and elbow movement, and the pattern of swelling. Arm numbness and tingling, elbow pain, hand numbness, and weak grip are useful details to describe, including what triggers or relieves them.

Avoid leaning on the inner elbow and try not to sleep with it tightly bent. Change positions during repetitive tasks, keep the wrist in a neutral position, and follow advice about activity modification. Do not wrap a swollen hand tightly or use a brace that causes more numbness. Physiotherapy may help with movement and nerve-protection strategies. Persistent compression may lead to discussion of cubital tunnel release, while splinting can be considered in selected cases.

Arrange prompt assessment for new or increasing swelling, redness, warmth, severe pain, or reduced hand movement. Seek emergency help if the hand becomes blue or pale, cold, rapidly enlarges, or suddenly loses strength or sensation. Fever, an open wound, or swelling after an injury also warrants timely evaluation.

Ask whether the swelling fits a nerve problem, whether circulation or joint causes need checking, whether nerve testing is useful, and which position or support is safest for sleep and work.
