CRP and liver function tests: what should you know?

CRP can rise when inflammation is present anywhere in the body; it does not show that the liver is the source. Liver function testing commonly includes several markers that give information about liver-cell irritation, bile flow and the liver's ability to make certain proteins. Results can be affected by medicines, alcohol, infection and other health conditions, so one abnormal value does not establish a diagnosis.

Bring your medicine and supplement list to the appointment and follow any preparation instructions. Ask which values are outside the expected range and whether the pattern needs a repeat test, examination or imaging. Do not stop prescribed medicine or change alcohol use abruptly without medical advice, especially if regular heavy drinking is involved.

Get urgent help for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, fainting or marked drowsiness. Prompt assessment is also needed for rapidly worsening illness, dehydration or breathing difficulty. Contact your clinician about persistent fever, dark urine or new swelling even when symptoms seem mild.

Ask whether the CRP result suggests inflammation, which liver markers were tested, and whether the pattern points toward a particular next step. Mention recent illness, alcohol intake, supplements and any exposure or symptoms relevant to hepatitis.
