Is the croup virus contagious?

Croup itself describes the child's airway reaction; the contagious part is usually the respiratory virus causing the infection. An infected child may also have a runny nose, cough, sore throat, or fever. Household members can catch the virus and develop a cold rather than croup, because airway size and individual response affect how symptoms appear.

Spread is more likely during close contact, coughing, sneezing, or sharing items touched around the mouth and nose. The presence of a barking cough does not predict whether another person will develop croup. Focus on hygiene and breathing safety rather than trying to judge risk from the cough alone.

Wash hands after wiping the child's nose, coughing, or handling used tissues. Clean frequently touched surfaces, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and improve fresh-air circulation when practical. Teach children to cough into a tissue or elbow. Keep the unwell child away from babies and vulnerable household members where feasible, and follow local advice about returning to nursery or school.

Arrange a child health consultation if the child's symptoms are unclear or worsening. Do not share prescription medicines between siblings, even if they develop similar cold symptoms.

Seek emergency help if the child struggles for breath, has ribs or neck pulling in, develops blue or grey lips, cannot swallow, drools, becomes difficult to wake, or has a harsh breathing sound while resting. Infection-control measures should never delay urgent help. Keep the child calm and upright while arranging assessment.

Ask how long the child should avoid close contact, when nursery or school attendance is reasonable, and how to protect a younger sibling. Also ask which changes in breathing require emergency help and whether a review is needed if fever persists.
