What should you know about croup in adults sound?

Croup is inflammation and swelling around the upper airway. In adults, a barking cough, hoarseness, or a high-pitched sound when breathing in may be described as croup, but infection, allergic swelling, inhaled material, or another airway problem can produce similar sounds. A common cold may come before croup, with cough or fever, yet those symptoms do not establish the cause. A clinician needs to listen to the breathing and examine the throat and chest when appropriate.

Sit upright, stay as calm as possible, and avoid smoke or other airway irritants. Sip fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Do not use leftover antibiotics, sedating medicines, or someone else’s inhaler. Arrange same-day medical advice for a new barking cough or noisy breathing. Depending on the findings, care may include observation, prescribed medicine, or nebuliser treatment in an urgent setting.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, confusion, fainting, drooling with difficulty swallowing, sudden facial or tongue swelling, or a high-pitched breathing sound that continues while resting. Sudden onset after eating or taking a medicine is also urgent. Do not drive yourself if breathing is becoming difficult.
