Croup cough at night: what to know

Short answer
A croup-like cough that worsens at night needs calm observation, supportive care, and attention to breathing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nights can be harder
Croup-related upper-airway swelling may sound more obvious at night, when a child is lying down and the surrounding environment is quiet. Mucus draining from the nose, dry air, or a change in airway tone can also trigger coughing. Acid reflux may irritate the throat after lying down. Allergic rhinitis, asthma, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and a common cold can produce nighttime cough for different reasons. Bronchiectasis and chronic cough need medical review when cough persists or brings up repeated mucus. The timing is useful information, but it does not identify a single cause.
What to do overnight
Sit the person upright and keep the room calm. Offer small sips of fluid if they can swallow comfortably. Clear a blocked nose with an age-appropriate method, avoid smoke and fragrances, and follow any prescribed breathing plan. Do not use steam, and never leave a distressed child alone while you search for remedies. Note the cough’s sound, the person’s position, breathing effort, voice, and ability to drink. A short audio recording in good lighting may help the clinician later.
When to seek care
Get emergency help if there is struggling to breathe, blue or grey colour around the lips, pauses in breathing, severe sleepiness, drooling with inability to swallow, or a harsh breathing noise while resting. Arrange prompt assessment when nighttime episodes recur, the cough is worsening, the person cannot rest or drink, or symptoms continue beyond the expected illness. Young children with breathing changes need early clinical advice.
Questions for your doctor
Does the timing suggest reflux, allergy, asthma, or an infection? What should we do if the cough wakes the child again? Should we track triggers, position, mucus, or breathing sounds?

Questions people ask
Why can croup sound worse at night?
Lying down, mucus, quiet surroundings, and changes in airway irritation can make the cough or upper-airway noise more noticeable.
Should a nighttime croup cough be checked?
Yes if breathing is difficult, noisy at rest, hydration is poor, episodes recur, or the illness is worsening.
