Cracked heels painful to walk on: what to know

Short answer
Cracked heels that hurt when you walk may be opening under pressure, so protect the fissure, reduce friction and seek assessment if pain or inflammation is increasing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why it hurts
- Walking stretches and loads the fissure
- Protective choice
- Cushioned footwear with a secure heel
Why walking can hurt
Each step loads the heel and stretches the skin. A shallow split may sting, while a deeper fissure can expose sensitive tissue and hurt when the edges separate. Thick callused skin, dry [Skin Cracking](/symptoms/skin-cracking/) and shoes that rub the back of the foot can all add pressure. Itch and scale on the sole or between the toes may also fit Athlete's Foot.
Pain does not identify the cause by itself. The depth of the crack, surrounding redness, drainage and changes in walking are more useful clues than pain alone.
Protect the heel
Wash gently and dry without rubbing. Apply a rich moisturiser around the heel; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can improve flexibility in dry surrounding skin. Wear cushioned, closed shoes with a secure heel and avoid footwear that presses on the split. Reduce activities that cause repeated rubbing while the area is sore. Do not pour harsh antiseptics into a fissure or cut away the edges. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a protective dressing is suitable.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if pain limits walking, the crack is deep or bleeding, or the area is not settling with protection. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness or fever. Have the foot checked early if you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation, even when the wound looks small.
Questions for your doctor
Is the pain from depth, infection or pressure? Would a dressing or prescription treatment help? Which shoes and activities are safest while the heel closes?
