Crack in heel of foot hurts: what should you know?

The heel carries repeated load while walking, so rough skin at its edge can open into a fissure. The split may sting when the foot bends or when footwear rubs it. Scaling between the toes, peeling, or itch can also point toward Athlete's Foot rather than simple dryness.

Wash gently, pat the heel dry, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Cover a shallow split with a clean dressing if it catches on socks. Wear supportive shoes and soft socks, and avoid walking barefoot on rough surfaces. Do not cut the hard rim with a blade or pull at loose skin.
