What should you know about a CPPD joint?

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, or CPPD, can affect cartilage and tissues around a joint. Some people have deposits without symptoms; others develop an abrupt flare with marked tenderness and difficulty moving the joint. Knees and wrists are common sites, but other joints can be involved. The symptoms of a CPPD flare can resemble infection or another form of arthritis, so the label should be based on an examination and the overall pattern. Protect the joint from heavy loading while it is hot and painful, but resume gentle movement as comfort returns. A wrapped cold pack and elevation may ease swelling. Get urgent medical care for a hot swollen joint plus fever, chills, confusion, or feeling faint. Prompt review is also appropriate when pain escalates quickly, the limb becomes difficult to use, or the episode is your first suspected flare.
