Can CPAP stop snoring?

Short answer
CPAP often improves snoring caused by obstructive sleep apnoea, but it should be prescribed after the breathing problem is assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main indication
- CPAP is primarily used for obstructive sleep apnoea.
- Mask fit
- A comfortable seal helps deliver the prescribed airflow.
- Persistent snoring
- Report it to the prescribing team rather than changing settings alone.
What CPAP is doing
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the upper airway vibrate as air passes through. In obstructive sleep apnoea, the airway can narrow repeatedly during sleep; CPAP sends air through a mask to support the airway and maintain airflow. Snoring may also be influenced by nasal congestion from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis, sleep position, alcohol, or body weight. Treating one factor does not necessarily address every source of noise.
Steps that improve use
If CPAP has been prescribed, wear it for the whole sleep period and use the settings provided by the sleep service. Check that the mask seals comfortably without being overtightened. Clean the mask and tubing as directed, and mention dryness, blocked nose, pressure discomfort or air escaping around the mask. Side sleeping, avoiding alcohol near bedtime and addressing nasal symptoms may support comfort, but they do not replace evaluation for sleep apnoea.
When to get checked
Seek a sleep assessment if snoring comes with breathing pauses, gasping, restless sleep, waking headaches, poor concentration or daytime sleepiness. Contact the prescribing team if snoring continues after you use CPAP correctly, if the mask is difficult to tolerate, or if symptoms return after a period of improvement. Urgent care is appropriate for severe breathlessness, chest pain or sudden confusion.
Questions for a review
Ask whether your symptoms need a sleep study, whether nasal treatment could improve mask comfort, how adherence is reviewed, and what to do if snoring continues.

Questions people ask
Can CPAP be used just for ordinary snoring?
It is generally considered after assessment identifies a condition such as obstructive sleep apnoea; simple snoring needs a different discussion.
What if my nose is blocked with CPAP?
Tell the clinician, because mask type, humidification or treatment for nasal symptoms may need review.
