COVID shortness of breath treatment

A clinician may ask when the breathlessness began, whether it happens at rest, and how it changes with movement. They may check breathing rate, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen levels, then listen to the chest. Treatment can range from careful rest and monitoring to medicines or oxygen support in a medical setting.

The right treatment is not the same for everyone. Asthma, COPD, acute bronchitis, anaemia, and heart conditions can also cause breathlessness, so treating the underlying problem matters.

Sit upright or lean slightly forward with your arms supported. Keep activity light, drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, and use only medicines prescribed for you. Keep a record of symptom changes and any home oxygen readings, including how you felt at the time. Do not borrow an inhaler or take antibiotics without medical direction.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to speak normally, or sudden chest pain. Seek urgent clinical review for breathlessness at rest, rapidly worsening symptoms, marked weakness, or difficulty managing basic activities. A prompt assessment can identify whether you need oxygen, a different medicine, or investigation for another cause.
