Coughing Up White Phlegm With Bubbles in the Morning

Mucus can collect overnight when you are lying down, then look foamy after coughing it up and mixing it with saliva and air. A blocked nose, post-nasal drainage, dry air, smoking, or irritation from a recent cold can contribute. Acute bronchitis may cause phlegm and cough for a period after an infection. Ongoing mucus can also occur with chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis, or COPD. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Pay attention to whether the cough is new or long-lasting, whether the mucus is increasing, and whether you also have fever, chest discomfort, wheezing, or breathlessness. Pink or bloody froth, severe breathlessness, or a blue-grey colour around the lips needs urgent attention.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid tobacco smoke and other airway irritants, and use humidified air if the room is dry. Gentle steam from a warm shower may loosen secretions; avoid burns from very hot water. Note the colour and amount of phlegm, the timing of the cough, and any triggers. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat every cause of phlegm and should be chosen by a clinician when appropriate.

Arrange a medical review if the cough keeps returning, interferes with sleep, or comes with fever, wheezing, chest pain, weight change, or reduced exercise tolerance. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, confusion, coughing blood, or frothy pink sputum. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether tests are needed based on your examination and history.

Ask whether the pattern fits post-nasal drainage, an airway infection, reflux, or a longer-term lung condition; whether an inhaler or other treatment is suitable; and what changes should prompt urgent care.
