Cough while pregnant: what to know

Short answer
A cough while pregnant is often caused by infection, nasal irritation or reflux, but persistent or severe symptoms should be assessed before choosing treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible reasons for the cough
Pregnancy can make the nose more congested and can worsen Acid Reflux, both of which may trigger coughing. A Common Cold, Acute Bronchitis or Allergic Rhinitis can also irritate the throat and airways. Asthma symptoms may change during pregnancy, so a new wheeze or chest tightness deserves medical review.
The cough itself does not identify the cause. A clinician will consider how long it has lasted, whether you have fever or phlegm, how you are breathing, your stage of pregnancy, and any medicines or health conditions.
Safer ways to manage it
Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke and use warm drinks to soothe an irritated throat. Saline nasal measures may help congestion. Raise your head slightly during rest if reflux contributes, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Check every medicine, lozenge or herbal product with a pharmacist, midwife or doctor before taking it.
Continue prescribed asthma treatment unless your maternity or respiratory clinician tells you otherwise. Do not stop regular medicines abruptly or use a relative’s inhaler. Arrange a review if the cough disrupts sleep, limits activity or is not settling.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly for fever, reduced ability to drink, persistent vomiting, new wheezing, or a cough accompanied by feeling significantly unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Tell the clinician how far along the pregnancy is and list every medicine or supplement you use. Ask which symptom remedies are suitable, whether reflux or allergy is contributing, how to manage asthma if relevant, and which warning signs require urgent care.
