Cough variant asthma treatment: what to know

In this form of asthma, coughing may be the main or only airway symptom. The airways become sensitive and narrow in response to triggers such as viral illness, exercise, smoke, dust or allergens. A clinician may listen to your chest, review the cough pattern and use breathing tests. A normal examination between episodes does not rule it out.

Treatment is tailored to the pattern and severity of symptoms. A reliever inhaler can ease airway narrowing when prescribed, while a preventer inhaler reduces airway inflammation over time. Improvement may take time, so do not stop a preventer suddenly without medical advice.

Use inhalers exactly as demonstrated, and ask for a technique check if the medicine seems ineffective. Keep a note of night-time cough, exercise-related symptoms, exposure to smoke or dust, and any response to treatment. Avoid tobacco smoke and reduce known irritants. Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy may add to airway irritation; treating those problems can be part of the plan.

If symptoms flare despite your prescribed plan, contact a clinician promptly. A nebuliser may be used in supervised urgent care when inhaled treatment is difficult or symptoms are severe; it is not a substitute for an individual asthma plan.

Arrange a medical review for a cough that keeps returning, interrupts sleep, limits activity, or continues after an infection. Seek urgent help for marked breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, severe chest tightness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait for a cough to become a wheeze before seeking assessment.
