What coughing up blood can mean

A bright red streak in phlegm can follow forceful coughing or irritation from a cold, acute bronchitis, asthma or post-nasal drainage. Acid reflux may contribute to a persistent throat-clearing cough. Repeated episodes with substantial mucus can occur with bronchiectasis, while a chronic cough has many possible causes. The colour alone cannot identify where the blood started.

Blood from the nose or gums may be noticed when clearing the throat rather than coughing from the chest. Tell a clinician if the blood is frothy, mixed with sputum, follows vomiting, or appears with breathlessness, chest pain, fever, dizziness or unusual weakness. Those details help determine whether urgent assessment is needed.

Write down when you first noticed the blood and whether it has returned. Avoid smoking, vaping and deliberate forceful coughing; drink fluids if comfortable. Review any medicines that affect clotting with a clinician rather than stopping them yourself. Arrange medical advice for any unexplained episode, especially if the cough persists or the blood returns.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, severe weakness, or bleeding that does not settle or is increasing. Seek prompt assessment for repeated blood, a worsening cough or fever. If you are unsure whether the blood came from your nose or chest and you feel unwell, treat that uncertainty seriously and obtain medical help.

Ask what source seems most likely after your examination, whether your medicines or existing airway symptoms matter, and what changes should prompt emergency help. Mention smoking or vaping, recent infection, reflux symptoms, nosebleeds and the exact sequence of events.
