Cough suppressant for post-nasal drip

Post-nasal drip describes mucus moving from the back of the nose towards the throat. This can cause throat clearing, a tickle, hoarseness or cough, often worse when lying down. Allergic Rhinitis, a cold or sinus irritation may contribute. A suppressant can reduce the cough reflex temporarily, but it does not stop mucus production or nasal inflammation.

The cough may be dry, or mucus may be felt in the throat without being brought up from the chest. Telling a clinician whether you have sneezing, blocked nose, itchy eyes, facial pressure, reflux symptoms or wheeze helps identify the most useful approach.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and notice whether dust, perfume or seasonal exposure worsens symptoms. Saline nasal care may soothe the nose for some people; use products exactly as directed. A pharmacist can advise on a suitable nasal treatment and check interactions. Do not combine several cold or allergy products without checking their ingredients.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion or coughing blood. Arrange review for fever with worsening facial pain, foul nasal discharge, recurrent symptoms, wheeze, or a cough that does not settle. Asthma, Acid Reflux and Chronic Cough can also produce persistent coughing and may need different care.

Ask whether the cough is coming from nasal drainage, reflux or the lower airways; which nasal measures are appropriate; and how long to try them. Mention allergies, pregnancy, regular medicines and any breathing symptoms.
