Short answer

Cough assist is a clinician-guided technique or device that helps a weak cough move mucus and secretions out of the airways.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Help move mucus when a cough is weak or ineffective
Common forms
A trained manual technique or a mechanical device
Training
Use after a clinician demonstrates the method and plan

The short answer

Cough assist is a clinician-guided technique or device that helps a weak cough move mucus and secretions out of the airways. It may combine a supported deep breath with pressure that helps air enter the lungs, followed by a quick change that helps push air and mucus out. A respiratory clinician or doctor should select the method and teach the settings, timing, and breathing pattern.

What cough assist means

People may need cough assistance when the muscles used for breathing are weak, tired, or poorly coordinated. The goal is to clear mucus so it is less likely to remain in the chest and interfere with breathing. Some people use a handheld breathing aid or a mechanical insufflation-exsufflation machine through a mask or mouthpiece; others learn a manually assisted cough with help from a trained carer. Cough assist does not treat every cause of coughing. A cough may occur with conditions such as Acute Bronchitis, Asthma, Bronchiectasis, or a Common Cold, so the underlying problem still needs attention.

How to use it safely

Use the method exactly as demonstrated, including the mask or mouthpiece position and the prescribed number of cough cycles. Sit upright if that is your clinician's instruction, pause between cycles, and stop if you develop marked breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, or new distress. Keep equipment clean according to its instructions, and do not change pressure, timing, or frequency without advice. Tell the clinician if the technique causes wheezing, pain, vomiting, blood-stained mucus, or does not help you clear secretions.

Drink fluids as advised for your health needs, because thick mucus can be harder to move. If you also have nasal symptoms, reflux, or a persistent cough, mention these; Allergic Rhinitis, Acid Reflux, and Chronic Cough may need separate assessment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or chest pain. Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot clear mucus, your breathing is becoming harder, you are coughing up blood, or you have a high fever with worsening symptoms. A baby or young child with noisy breathing, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or pauses in breathing needs urgent assessment; Bronchiolitis can affect breathing in young children.

Contact your healthcare team if your usual cough-assist routine stops working, your oxygen reading is lower than the level they gave you, or you need the treatment more often than planned.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which type of cough assistance is suitable for you, how to recognise an effective cough, and what to do if mucus remains after a session. Confirm how often to use it, whether a carer should help, how to clean the equipment, and which symptoms mean you should stop. Ask whether medicines, physiotherapy, or treatment for the cause of your cough should be part of the same plan.

Questions people ask

Is cough assist the same as an ordinary cough?

No. It is a supported breathing and coughing method designed to strengthen the movement of air and help clear secretions when a person's own cough is not effective.

Can you start cough assist without an assessment?

It is safer to have a clinician assess your breathing, explain the suitable method, and set up any device before you begin.

What if cough assist makes breathing worse?

Stop the session and seek clinical advice, especially if you have chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness, or a change in colour or alertness.
