Cough and wheezing treatment

Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound caused by narrowed or inflamed airways. Asthma can cause episodes triggered by exercise, allergens, cold air, or infection. Acute bronchitis may produce cough and temporary airway irritation. Allergic rhinitis can contribute to upper-airway symptoms, while COPD can cause persistent cough, mucus, and breathlessness. Bronchiolitis is mainly a concern in young children. Sudden wheezing with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat may indicate anaphylaxis.

Treatment cannot be chosen safely from the sound alone. A clinician may ask about timing, triggers, smoking or vaping, previous episodes, medicines, and nighttime symptoms, then examine breathing and decide whether testing is needed.

Avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and other known triggers while symptoms are active. Use a prescribed inhaler exactly as directed and check technique with a clinician or pharmacist. Do not use someone else's inhaler or start antibiotics without advice. A nebuliser treatment may be used in some settings to deliver medicine as a mist, but it is not suitable for every cause or person.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or swelling of the face, mouth, or throat. Seek prompt assessment if wheezing is new, recurrent, worsening, associated with chest pain, or not settling with your prescribed reliever plan. Children with poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or laboured breathing need urgent review.

Ask what may be narrowing the airways, how to recognise an asthma flare or allergic emergency, and which inhaler or other treatment is appropriate. Request a demonstration of technique and a written plan for symptoms that worsen at home.
