Cough after a common cold

A cough can continue after a common cold because irritated airways and mucus take time to settle, but new breathing trouble needs review. The sound of the cough matters less than its direction: gradual improvement is reassuring, while a cough that worsens or returns after improvement deserves attention.

A blocked nose can cause mucus to drain towards the throat and trigger coughing, especially when lying down. The infection can also leave the breathing tubes sensitive. A new fever, chest pain, breathlessness, earache, or facial pain may point to another problem such as acute bronchitis, sinusitis or a middle-ear infection, rather than simple recovery.

Rest, drink fluids and avoid cigarette smoke or other airway irritants. Saline nose care may ease a blocked nose. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant under one year. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health needs.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or chest pain that is intense or persistent. Arrange a clinical review if the cough is worsening, sleep and daily activity are being disrupted, fever returns, or earache or facial pain develops.
