Costochondritis and shortness of breath: what to know

Costochondritis is irritation where a rib joins the breastbone. The area may feel sore when pressed, twisting, coughing, or taking a deep breath. You may take smaller breaths to avoid pain, which can feel like breathlessness. Costochondritis itself does not explain every episode of shortness of breath. Wheezing, fever, cough, palpitations, unusual tiredness, or breathlessness during activity can point to a separate problem such as asthma, acute bronchitis, anaemia, or a heart or lung condition.

A clinician may ask when the sensation began, whether it changes with movement or touch, and whether you can speak comfortably. They may check your breathing, heart rate, oxygen level, and chest.

Rest from movements that reproduce the pain, keep your upper body gently mobile, and avoid repeatedly testing the pain with forceful breaths. Follow the label or a clinician’s advice before using a pain reliever, especially if you have stomach, kidney, liver, bleeding, pregnancy, or medicine concerns. Do not use someone else’s inhaler. Arrange a medical review if breathlessness is new, persistent, returning, or limiting normal activity.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, inability to speak in full sentences, or chest pressure that does not ease. Urgent assessment is also needed for sudden breathlessness with coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling, or a fast irregular heartbeat. Do not assume these warning signs are costochondritis.

Ask: Does pressing or moving the rib area reproduce my pain? Could my breathing symptoms reflect asthma, anaemia, an infection, or a heart rhythm problem? Do I need an examination or tests? Which pain medicines are suitable with my health conditions? What changes should prompt urgent help?
