COPD nursing support: what to expect

A nurse may ask about breathlessness, cough, wheeze, chest tightness, mucus, sleep, activity, and recent flare-ups. They can check observations, review your medicines, and watch how you use an inhaler. This creates a clearer picture of how COPD affects daily life.

Support may also cover pacing, breathing strategies, physical activity suited to your ability, vaccinations, nutrition, and avoiding smoke or other irritants. The aim is to give you a practical plan that fits your routine and identifies changes worth reporting.

Bring your inhalers and a list of medicines, including products bought without a prescription. Note what makes breathing worse, how far you can walk, changes in phlegm, and whether symptoms disturb sleep. Demonstrate your inhaler technique rather than assuming it is correct.

Agree on an action plan for worsening symptoms, including who to contact and what information to share. If you smoke, ask about a smoking cessation programme. Regular chronic disease reviews can help the team adjust support as your needs change.

Contact your healthcare team promptly if breathlessness, cough, wheeze, or phlegm is clearly worse than usual, or if normal activities become harder. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to speak in full sentences.

Ask which symptoms belong in your action plan, how to use each inhaler, when you need a review, and whether spirometry should be repeated. Ask for a written plan if you are unsure what to do during a flare-up.
