Constipation and pregnancy relief

Short answer
Constipation during pregnancy is common and often improves with fluids, fibre, movement, and pregnancy-safe treatment advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Helpful habits
- Fluids, gradual fibre, gentle movement, and regular toilet time
- Medication check
- Ask before using laxatives or changing iron
Why pregnancy can change bowel habits
Hormonal changes can slow the movement of food through the bowel. A growing uterus, reduced activity, changes in appetite, and iron supplements may add to the problem. Hard stools, straining, fewer bowel movements, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied are typical features. Constipation itself does not usually harm the pregnancy, but persistent symptoms deserve attention so dehydration, an underlying condition, or a medicine effect is not missed.
Ways to ease constipation
Drink fluids regularly unless your maternity team has advised a restriction. Increase fibre gradually with fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts; a sudden increase can cause gas and cramps. Gentle walking can encourage bowel movement. Allow time and privacy on the toilet, and respond when you feel the urge rather than repeatedly straining. Do not start a laxative, herbal product, or stool softener without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy. If iron is worsening symptoms, ask whether the formulation or dose can be adjusted.
When to seek medical care
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, fever, black stools, or blood mixed with stool. Seek urgent help for fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, or severe one-sided pain. Arrange a routine review if constipation persists despite self-care, keeps returning, or limits eating and daily activity. A clinician can check medicines, hydration, thyroid function, and bowel symptoms before recommending treatment.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Could my prenatal vitamin or iron supplement be contributing? Which fibre product, stool softener, or laxative is appropriate for me? How much fluid is suitable with my pregnancy or medical history? What symptoms should lead me to contact the maternity service?
