Constipation after labor: what to know

Short answer
Constipation after labor can result from soreness, reduced movement, fluid changes, or pain medicine, and gentle hydration, fibre, and activity may help.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fluids, gradual fibre, walking, and avoiding forceful straining
Why labor can affect bowel movements
After labor, pelvic soreness or stitches can make people hold back from passing stool. Reduced walking, less drinking, changes in meals, and opioid pain relief can slow the bowel. Iron prescribed after delivery may also make stools harder.
Constipation can involve hard or lumpy stool, straining, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied. These symptoms are common during recovery, but ongoing or severe discomfort deserves a medical review.
Making bowel movements easier
Sip fluids through the day when allowed, and add fibre gradually with fruit, vegetables, oats, beans, and whole grains. A short walk can support bowel movement. Use a comfortable toilet position and avoid forceful straining.
Ask your maternity team whether a stool softener or laxative is suitable. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless the prescriber changes them. Mention breastfeeding, tears, stitches, or significant pain when discussing treatment.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity or primary-care team if you cannot pass stool, pain is increasing, or constipation continues despite simple measures. Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, faintness, or heavy bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
Could my pain relief or iron be contributing? What bowel medicine is suitable after labor and during breastfeeding? How can I protect sore stitches while passing stool?

Questions people ask
Can straining harm stitches after labor?
Soreness can make bowel movements difficult. Ask your maternity team about positioning and a suitable stool-softening plan rather than repeatedly straining.
What if pain medicine is causing constipation?
Ask the prescriber about alternatives or a bowel treatment; do not change prescribed pain relief without advice.
