Short answer

Constipation six weeks after birth can reflect healing, pelvic floor strain, medicines, or low fluids, so persistent symptoms merit review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be contributing

After birth, soreness from stitches or swelling can make you avoid pushing. Changes in activity, interrupted meals, low fluid intake while caring for a baby, iron tablets, and opioid pain medicine may also slow the bowel. Pelvic floor muscles can feel weak, tight, or difficult to coordinate, making stool harder to pass.

At six weeks, ongoing constipation is worth raising at a postnatal appointment, especially with rectal bleeding, pain, leakage, a bulge, or a persistent feeling of incomplete emptying. Constipation does not by itself identify a specific condition; a clinician can review medicines, healing, bowel habits, and hydration.

Practical measures

Drink regularly, eat fibre-containing foods gradually, and walk gently if your recovery allows. Sit with your feet supported, relax your abdomen, and avoid holding your breath or straining. Protect privacy and allow enough time rather than rushing when the urge comes.

Ask your maternity team, doctor, or pharmacist about a stool-softening or laxative option compatible with breastfeeding and your medicines. Do not discontinue iron or prescribed pain relief without discussing alternatives. Nutrition Counselling can help if meals and fluids are difficult to organise.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe or increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a very swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, black or bloody stool, faintness, or fever with marked illness. Arrange a postnatal review when symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with eating, movement, sleep, or caring for yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether healing, iron, pain medicine, or pelvic floor changes are affecting bowel movements; which treatment is suitable while breastfeeding; and whether you need a pelvic floor assessment. Mention bleeding, pain, leakage, and the date of your last comfortable bowel movement.
