Constant snoring: what to know

Short answer

Constant snoring comes from vibration in a narrowed upper airway, and it should be assessed when breathing pauses, gasping, or daytime sleepiness occur.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mechanism
Snoring is vibration of relaxed upper-airway tissues during sleep.
Key clue
Pauses, choking, gasping, or daytime sleepiness need assessment.
Useful observation
A sleep partner may notice breathing changes you cannot feel yourself.

Why snoring may continue

During sleep, muscles around the throat relax. Air moving through a narrowed passage can make the soft tissues vibrate, producing snoring. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis can encourage mouth breathing. Alcohol near bedtime, sedating medicines, sleeping on the back, and excess tissue around the upper airway may increase narrowing. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition in which the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep; loud snoring may occur with pauses, choking, gasping, restless sleep, morning headaches, or difficulty staying alert during the day. Snoring alone cannot establish that diagnosis, but these accompanying signs deserve attention.

Steps to try

Ask a sleep partner what they notice, including pauses or gasping, and record how rested you feel in the morning. Keep regular sleep times, avoid alcohol close to bedtime, and review sedating medicines with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. Side sleeping may reduce airway collapse for some people. Treating nasal allergy or congestion can improve airflow when that is contributing. If body weight is affecting breathing, discuss a supported Weight Management Programme rather than relying on unstructured advice. Do not use unapproved devices or remedies that promise to stop snoring.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an appointment if snoring is persistent, newly severe, or accompanied by poor concentration, morning headaches, high blood pressure, or unrefreshing sleep. Request prompt assessment for witnessed breathing pauses, repeated choking or gasping, or marked daytime sleepiness that could make driving unsafe. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting, or confusion.

Questions for a clinician

Ask whether your symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnoea, whether a sleep assessment is needed, how nasal blockage can be treated, and which lifestyle changes are realistic for you.

Questions people ask

Does constant snoring mean sleep apnoea?

Not necessarily, but pauses, gasping, restless sleep, and daytime sleepiness make assessment especially important.

Can a blocked nose worsen snoring?

Yes. Nasal allergy or sinus inflammation can narrow airflow and encourage mouth breathing during sleep.
