Constant Burping and Feeling Like Vomiting: What to Know

Short answer
Constant burping with a feeling like vomiting can come from stomach irritation, infection, migraine, or another digestive problem and should be judged by accompanying symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Pain location, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, urine output, and alertness
- Hydration approach
- Small frequent sips, increasing as tolerated
Possible explanations
Nausea and burping may follow eating too quickly, a heavy meal, reflux, or temporary stomach irritation. Gastroenteritis and Food Poisoning can cause nausea with vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, or fever. Migraine can bring nausea even when head pain is mild or absent. Gallstones may cause upper-right abdominal pain, often after eating, while Pancreatitis can cause severe upper-abdominal pain that may spread to the back. Rotavirus Infection is another possible cause of vomiting and diarrhoea, especially in children. Meningitis is uncommon but urgent when nausea occurs with severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, or marked light sensitivity.
What you can do now
Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Choose bland portions when able, and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and strong smells if they worsen nausea. Rest, wash hands carefully if infection is possible, and note when symptoms began, what you ate, bowel changes, fever, pain, and any medicines. Do not force food. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term illness may become dehydrated sooner and should seek advice earlier.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, a swollen abdomen, confusion, stiff neck, severe headache, faintness, or trouble breathing. Seek prompt care if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, or become unusually drowsy. Repeated vomiting or worsening symptoms also warrant same-day assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this fit an infection, reflux, migraine, Gallstones, or another cause? How can I replace fluids safely? Do my pain or fever pattern require tests? Which signs should send me to emergency care?

Questions people ask

No. Burping and nausea can occur together, but burping does not predict whether vomiting will follow.
When does nausea with burping need urgent help?
Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, repeated vomiting, dehydration, blood in vomit, confusion, stiff neck, or a severe headache.
