Conjunctivitis without discharge: what to know

Discharge is only one possible feature of conjunctival inflammation. Viral illness, allergy, dryness and exposure to smoke or dust may cause redness and watering without sticky material. Early infection may also have little visible discharge. The pattern, duration and associated symptoms help guide assessment, but no discharge does not confirm or rule out conjunctivitis. Pain, vision change or strong light sensitivity point towards a need to look for another eye condition.

Avoid rubbing the eye and wash hands regularly, especially before applying any drops. A cool compress may ease irritation; clean eyewear and avoid smoke, dust, cosmetics and contact lenses while symptoms continue. Do not start antibiotic drops simply because the eye is red, and do not use medication prescribed for another person. A pharmacist or GP can advise whether lubricating, allergy or prescription treatment is appropriate.

Arrange prompt assessment if the eye is painful, vision is reduced or blurred, light becomes difficult to tolerate, swelling is marked, or an injury, chemical splash or foreign body is possible. Seek urgent help for rapid worsening or inability to open the eye. If redness persists or keeps returning without discharge, a GP consultation can help identify dry eye, eyelid inflammation or a corneal problem.

Ask what findings support conjunctivitis, whether contact lenses or cosmetics should be paused, which comfort measures are suitable, and when persistent redness needs an eye examination.
