What should you know about conjunctivitis and heart failure?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the surface membrane of the eye. Heart failure affects how the heart pumps blood and may cause breathlessness, ankle swelling, tiredness, or fluid retention; it is not a typical cause of a red, itchy, or sticky eye. A person can have both conditions, but one does not establish the other.

Eye redness or discharge may instead reflect infection, allergy, irritation, a medication reaction, or another eye condition. Bring a complete medicine list to an assessment because some treatments and health conditions can affect which eye products are suitable.

Continue prescribed heart medicines unless the clinician who manages your heart condition tells you otherwise. Clean discharge gently, wash hands, avoid rubbing, and use separate towels. Do not borrow eye drops or start an old antibiotic prescription. If you use contact lenses, remove them while the eye is irritated and use glasses.

A GP consultation can assess the eye and consider your heart history, fluid symptoms, allergies, and current medicines. Mention breathlessness, sudden weight change, swelling, or difficulty lying flat if these are also present, because they need assessment on their own terms.

Seek urgent eye care for significant pain, strong light sensitivity, reduced vision, injury, or rapidly worsening swelling. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, or sudden confusion. Arrange routine review when eye symptoms persist, recur, or do not fit a mild irritation pattern.

Ask whether the eye problem appears separate from your heart condition, whether any current medicine affects treatment choices, and whether you need an eye examination. Clarify which eye and heart symptoms require same-day or emergency care.
