What should you know about conch keloid?

Keloid scars form when healing tissue keeps producing scar material after the skin has closed. On the conch, the swelling may sit around a piercing or another small wound, feel smooth or rubbery, and range from skin-coloured to darker than nearby skin. A skin lump can have several causes, so examination matters; a clinician may check its borders, firmness, colour, tenderness, and change over time.

A keloid can be uncomfortable when headphones, jewellery, or sleep puts pressure on it. It is different from a hypertrophic scar, which stays within the original injury. Do not cut, squeeze, or repeatedly traumatise the area.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the lump is growing, rubbing against devices, or bothering you. Treatment is selected according to its size, symptoms, location, skin type, and whether it has returned before. Options may include steroid injection into the skin, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or removal surgery; recurrence is possible, so a plan to reduce regrowth may accompany a procedure.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and protect it from friction. Ask before replacing or removing jewellery if the channel is still healing, because further irritation can complicate the area. A clinician can explain whether pressure therapy or a combination approach is suitable.

Seek prompt medical assessment for rapid enlargement, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, bleeding without an obvious cause, marked pain, or a change in colour or surface. These features can signal infection, irritation, or another lesion rather than a straightforward scar. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling that affects hearing, the ear canal, or your ability to use prescribed devices.
