Complications of labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis affects the inner-ear signals that help the brain control balance and, in some cases, hearing. Ongoing vertigo or dizziness can make walking, driving, climbing stairs and working near machinery unsafe. Ringing in the ears or reduced hearing may continue after the spinning sensation improves. Avoiding movement because it feels uncomfortable can also slow the return of balance. Symptoms that persist, change pattern or affect one side particularly strongly may need assessment because not every cause of dizziness is labyrinthitis.

Move slowly, sit down when the room spins and remove trip hazards at home. Do not drive, cycle or use machinery while balance or vision is unreliable. Drink regularly and follow prescribed treatment instructions. Gentle, gradual movement may help the balance system adapt, but stop if symptoms become severe. Arrange a GP consultation if vertigo, ringing in the ears or hearing difficulty is not settling or is stopping ordinary activities.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, a new severe headache, fainting, chest pain or inability to walk. Get prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, repeated vomiting, severe dehydration, worsening symptoms or an injury after a fall. These warning signs can point to a problem needing urgent treatment rather than a routine recovery from labyrinthitis.
