The surgeon assesses alignment, movement, skin condition, circulation, bone and ligament support before choosing an implant strategy.

Components commonly provide metal joint surfaces with a durable polyethylene insert between them. Fixation may use bone cement or a design intended for bone to grow onto it. Stems, wedges or more constrained components may be considered when ordinary components would not provide enough support or stability. Computer navigation may assist alignment in selected cases.

Before surgery, review medicines, allergies, dental or skin infections, smoking, blood sugar management and home support with the clinical team. Prepare safe walking routes and arrange help for early daily tasks. Follow the hospital's instructions about fasting, medicines and washing rather than applying a generic schedule.

Afterward, pain control, swelling management, clot prevention, wound care and progressive walking support early recovery. Physiotherapy works on knee movement, muscle activation, balance and safe transfers. Progress depends on the reconstruction, so weight-bearing and exercise limits may differ from a routine knee replacement.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain after initial improvement, a new inability to bear weight, or swelling that is not following the expected pattern. A hot, increasingly swollen knee with systemic illness needs urgent assessment.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing blood, fainting, or a painful swollen calf. A cold, pale or numb foot, new foot weakness or uncontrolled bleeding also requires immediate evaluation.

Ask which anatomical or stability issue makes the operation complex, whether specialised components or fixation are anticipated, and how this changes weight-bearing or rehabilitation. Clarify the plan for preventing infection and blood clots, the wound-care instructions, and whom to contact if recovery deviates from the expected course.
