The Main Types of Lung Cancer

Short answer
The main lung cancer groups are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer, which differ in behaviour and treatment planning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What are the main lung cancer types?
Non-small cell lung cancer includes adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. Small cell lung cancer tends to grow and spread differently, so clinicians use a distinct approach to staging and selecting treatment.
What the type tells the care team
The type describes how cancer cells look and behave under laboratory examination. Adenocarcinoma develops from gland-forming cells, while squamous cell carcinoma arises from flat cells lining the airways. The label helps narrow treatment choices but does not provide the whole plan.
Stage, tumour location, lung function, general health and molecular features also matter. Genomic tumour profiling can look for changes that may be matched with certain medicines in suitable non-small cell tumours. Results are interpreted alongside the pathology report rather than in isolation.
Steps after an abnormal scan
The team usually needs cells or tissue from the suspicious area to identify the cancer type. The sampling method depends on where the tumour sits and may involve a bronchoscopy, a needle guided by imaging, or another procedure chosen for safe access.
Once pathology and staging information are available, specialists can discuss options such as surgery for an operable tumour, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted medicine. Bring a medicines list and relevant medical history, and ask for plain-language copies of the scan and pathology findings.
Changes that need urgent assessment
The cancer type does not determine whether a symptom is an emergency. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing up a significant amount of blood, sudden intense chest pain, collapse or lips turning blue or grey.
Emergency assessment is also appropriate for a new seizure, sudden one-sided weakness, marked confusion or a severe unfamiliar headache. These red flags need attention even while biopsy or staging results are pending.
Questions about your pathology result
Ask for the exact cell type, whether the sample was adequate, which molecular or immune-marker tests are relevant, and how the stage was determined. You can also ask which findings drive the recommended treatment, what alternatives exist, and whether the plan aims to remove, control or relieve effects of the cancer.
Questions people ask
Is adenocarcinoma a type of lung cancer?
Yes. Adenocarcinoma is a subtype of non-small cell lung cancer and develops from gland-forming cells.
Can a scan show the exact lung cancer type?
A scan can show an abnormal area and help define its extent, but cells or tissue are generally needed to confirm the exact type.
Why might molecular testing be requested?
Some non-small cell lung cancers carry molecular changes that can influence medicine choices, so profiling may add useful information to the pathology and stage.
